EUROPEAN DAY OF COMMEMORATION OF THE HOLOCAUST AGAINST THE ROMA
On August 2, 2022, we commemorate 78 years since the tragic events of the night of August 2, 1944, when almost 3,000 people - children, women and elderly people of Roma ethnicity - were exterminated in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. European Parliament established, by the resolution of April 15, 2015, August 2 as the "European Day of Commemoration of the Holocaust Against the Roma". In Romania, by Law No. 124/2020, this day was declared the National Day of Commemoration of the Holocaust Against the Roma - Samudaripen.
The Ministry of European Investments and Projects (MIPE), through the presence of Deputy General Secretary Cecilia Văduva, in her capacity as Coordinator National Contact Point for Roma / National Contact Point for Roma, laid a wreath at the Holocaust Monument and participated in the ceremony honoring the memory of the victims of this event of sad remembrance for humanity.
"In our opinion, the actions occasioned by the annual commemoration of the Roma victims of the extermination of August 2, 1944, contribute to the awareness exercise of the Romanian population and to the prevention of attitudes that could lead to the repetition of similar events.
We take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to continue supporting efforts to include Roma citizens and to prevent racial manifestations directed against them. At the same time, we confirm the availability to collaborate with the social actors involved in solving the problems faced by the Roma communities!" said Mrs. Cecilia Văduva, deputy general secretary in the MIPE.
