2 August – European Day of Commemoration of the Holocaust Against the Roma
On August 2, 2021, we commemorate 77 years since the tragic events of the night of August 2, 1944, when 2,897 Roma - women, elderly, children - from the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp were exterminated. The European Parliament established, by the resolution of April 15, 2015, August 2 as the "European Day of Commemoration of the Holocaust against the Roma". In Romania, by Law no. 124/2020, this day was declared the national day of commemoration of the Holocaust against the Roma - Samudaripen.
The Ministry of Investments and European Projects (MIPE), through the presence of the Secretary of State, Corina Atanasiu, joined the event, with the aim of honoring the memory of the victims. "77 years ago, almost 3000 Roma were exterminated in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Along with the Holocaust of the Jews, the Holocaust of the Roma is an abominable page of history that must be read and told over and over," said Corina Atanasiu, MIPE state secretary.
